Captioning Vendors

There are plenty of different third-party captioning companies out there. Please feel free to research the company that will work best for you. The two companies that the DAO has some experience with are 3Play Media and Rev.

3Play Media

3Play Media offers captioning services for video and audio content. Through 3Play Media you can set up automatic captions for live events, and get high accuracy captions for pre-recorded video.

The Digital Accessibility Office (DAO) set up a campus contract with 3Play Media. This means that all departments have access to 3Play Media’s services and features at a discounted price.

3Play Media Platform Integrations

3Play Media’s integrations page show that they work with many different platforms including YouTube, Zoom, Facebook, Vimeo and Panopto. Not all services are offered on each platform and there may be extra steps involved depending on your platform of choice.

Rev

Rev offers several services including auto live captions for Zoom, as well as high accuracy transcriptions and captions for pre-recorded video. Please visit the Rev Website to learn more about their services and pricing.

What to look for in a captioning vendor?

  • Accuracy
    • 99%+ accuracy is required for pre-recorded videos.
    • Low accuracy could impact a user’s ability to both understand and enjoy your content.
  • Price
    • Shop around and compare! The DAO has negotiated a good price with 3Play Media, but you may find another service that better fits your needs.
  • Turn Around Time
    • If you are on a tight deadline you may need to search for a vendor that can get your captions to you in a timely manner.
  • Security Concerns like HIPAA
    • Not all captioning services are HIPAA certified. Shop around!
    • 3Play Media is HIPAA compliant which is one of the reasons DAO started a contract with them.
